August 3, 1999
On the 11th of July I took part in the Finnish Championships. Unfortunately I didn't do very well. My goal was to win it but I only got 6th place. Throughout the race I had pretty bad back troubles and lost my speed because of this. Not much more to say, I'd rather forget about it.
Then less than two weeks ago I raced the Scandinavian Championships that were held here in Vuokatti, Finland. Prior to the race I had visited an osteopathic therapeutics. He did some treatment for my back, and he also told me what I have to do to get over my back troubles. I also went to get a massage two days before the race to loosen up my muscles. Unfortunately my hard summer job has taken its own. My legs hasn't felt like they should have. I was fortunate to get some days off my job to go and prepare earlier. This helped a lot and I think that it's because of this that I did so good. It couldn't have been my training because it's been non existing.
To the result. I finished 14th and 3rd fastest Finn. The race field was quite good because Norways Rune Hoydal won the race. I lost around 14 min to him which is not much considering all the circumstances. I was happy to be 3rd best Finn because I wasn't selected to the national team because I haven't raced enough here in Finland. This made my race a little bit harder too, because I had to start from the last line( as usual). I showed them tough. I must have passed almost 40 riders including 4 national team members.
My Finland "vacation" is coming to it's end. I only have 3 days left of work and on the 12th of this month I'm flying over to the USA again. I will most probably compete again at the Norba National Finals in Mount Snow, Vermont on the 20th of August. I'm looking forward to it because I would like to do a smoking ride. I'm stoked to soon be in a position where I can start concentrating on biking again. Maybe I'll see you soon or talk to you, until then, enjoy the warm (hot) summer days.
